Safety Tips for International Students
The United States is, for the vast majority of international students, a safe and welcoming place to study and live. But like any country, it has areas and situations that require awareness and good judgment.
On Campus
American university campuses are generally safe environments. Most universities have their own campus police departments that operate 24 hours a day. Familiarize yourself with the campus emergency phone number, the location of the student health center, and the university's Safe Walk or escort service — a program where a campus security volunteer will walk with you to your destination at night.
Off Campus
Know your neighborhood. When you first arrive, ask other students or your international student advisor about which neighborhoods are safe at different times of day.
Be aware of your surroundings. When walking, especially at night, stay in well-lit areas and be aware of the people around you.
Use rideshares at night. Apps like Uber and Lyft are widely used and are a safe alternative to walking long distances alone after dark.
Secure your belongings. Never leave your laptop or other valuables unattended in public spaces like the library or cafeteria.
Emergency Numbers
- 911: The emergency number for police, fire, and ambulance in the US. For genuine emergencies only.
- Non-emergency police line: For situations that require police but are not immediate emergencies.
- Campus security: Know your campus police department's direct number.
Financial Safety and Scams
Scammers sometimes target international students with fraudulent calls or emails claiming to be from the IRS, USCIS, or other government agencies, threatening arrest or deportation unless you pay immediately. US government agencies do not call or email demanding immediate payment — these are scams. Hang up and report to campus security.
Online Safety
Use unique, strong passwords for your university account and financial accounts. Be cautious about sharing personal information on social media. Use your university's secure Wi-Fi network rather than open public networks when conducting sensitive transactions.
