Application Timeline: Month-by-Month Calendar
Applying to US universities is a process that unfolds over 12–18 months. Use this calendar to stay on track. Dates assume you plan to begin study in the fall semester (September) — the most common start time for international students.
18–15 Months Before Enrollment
- Begin researching schools and programs
- Make a preliminary list of target schools (aim for 8–15 schools)
- Research tuition costs and scholarship options at target schools
- Understand which standardized tests you will need
- Begin English language preparation if needed
12–15 Months Before
- Register for and take the TOEFL or IELTS
- Register for the SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT as required
- Research scholarship and financial aid deadlines — some are much earlier than application deadlines
- Identify two to three teachers or professors who can write strong letters of recommendation
12 Months Before
- Confirm your list of target schools
- Request letters of recommendation
- Begin drafting your personal statement or statement of purpose
- Collect all academic transcripts; arrange for certified English translations if needed
9–10 Months Before (Summer Before Application Year)
- Finalize your personal statement with revisions based on feedback
- Check each school's specific requirements for international students
- Prepare financial documentation (bank statements, sponsorship letters)
7–8 Months Before (November–December)
- Submit Early Decision/Early Action applications (deadlines are typically November 1–15)
- Continue preparing Regular Decision applications
- Retake TOEFL/IELTS or other tests if you need to improve your scores
5–7 Months Before (January–February)
- Submit all Regular Decision applications (most deadlines are January 1 – February 1)
- Verify that all supporting documents have been received by each school
3–4 Months Before (March–April)
- Receive admission decisions (typically released in late March–early April)
- Compare financial aid packages carefully
- Make your final school selection and submit your enrollment deposit by May 1
2–3 Months Before (May–June)
- Receive your I-20 from your chosen school
- Pay the SEVIS I-901 fee
- Complete the DS-160 online visa application form
- Schedule your visa interview at the nearest US Embassy or Consulate
- Arrange housing (on-campus dormitory applications often due in May–June)
1–2 Months Before (July–August)
- Attend your visa interview; receive your F-1 visa
- Make travel arrangements (you may enter the US no more than 30 days before your program start date)
- Arrange your finances: set up a bank account or international transfer
- Attend your university's international student orientation
